The success of our work at Maya Traditions is made possible through the constant support of volunteers. Here, we introduce volunteer Bethany who is currently supporting our work in Guatemala:

Bethany was born and raised in Portland, Oregon but came to Maya Traditions from Washington, D.C. to volunteer on our organic medicinal herb garden and with other special projects. Bethany spent several years working as a Capitol Hill aide on social justice and human rights policies.

Through her involvement in her community in Washington D.C., Bethany developed a passion for sustainable, organic agriculture. She pursued this passion by taking several urban agriculture classes in topics ranging from beekeeping to composting, and Bethany applied her knowledge of urban agriculture through her involved in several agriculture projects in the Washington D.C. area. Her passion for sustainable agriculture and her work on immigration reform, international labor policy, and international women and children issues led her to pursue volunteer work with Maya Traditions.

Bethany graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of Oregon where she majored in psychology and minored in Spanish. In addition to federal policy, her professional background is in developmental psychology focusing on education and health disparities among youth. Bethany looks forward to learning about organic agriculture in Guatemala as well as the culture and other traditional practices of the Maya community.
